Can H1B and F1 Visa holders earn money online?

H1B people, its little harsh but you got to understand this point that you are Resident Alien (Immigrant) at this point and can only work for your employer and if there is any other source of Income(online earnings) its considered as Illegal earnings. So basically, if you are on a H1-B visa, you are authorized to work for only one those employers that sponsor your visa. You cannot be self-employed and earn additional income and doing so will render you out-of-status.

As we all know, an F1 visa does not allow you to take off campus employment anywhere or anytime you want. You can only take employment under specific circumstances, such as through OPT or CPT and there are hardship provisions too. But generally, an F1 student cannot simply go out and find employment. This is illegal. I would encourage you not to do this because it is a violation of your status. But, there is a clause where as an F1 Student you were allowed to make money up to $600 per advertising program for which you don’t have to file any taxes. Usually we don’t make that much so we are good to continue if you are already making some money.

But it at all your blog/website is becoming popular and you are earning more money than $600, I would suggest you to better transfer the monetary accounts to your home country banks or register a company and open a bank account with an person who is legal to take care of those operations. You strictly can’t own any business with this status, so be aware of it.

thanks for this post. It helped me a lot. Btw How you get ideas for such posts. sorry if it’s out of topic.

What if you are on F1 and are getting the money from outside the US ?

You can always get money from outside US; your VISA status shouldn’t be an issue for that. Of course in F1 as a student you can and will bring money to support yourself, its obvious.

thanks for your reply.
But, i’m not talking about the money we get when coming to US. Ok let me tell you the story. I’m from India and this winter I did some work for my friend in the UK. He’s going to pay me for that. I’m not sure weather I’ll be able to accept this money in a US bank while I’m on F-1.

Anyone can transfer money into your US account, it shouldn’t matter as long as you are not being paid for the work that you did in US. As you are on F1
status you are not supposed to work for anyone other than for your university upto 20hours. So it shouldn’t matter if you have worked outside the country and
receive monies for it. Its like working with some company in India and receiving it balance dues after couple of months , by then you are in US on F1. But make sure you are not working in US. I think online wise you are still good as its personal and paychecks cant be run for that work as you are not supposed to, but you can receive money from anyone into your US bank.
Hope this helps!! You can probably check gov sites related to F1 status and confirm again.

Hi there!

I’m new to this forum and just wanted to say hi. So Hi!

Hi, I am on F1 status, and am considering signing up for a paypal account. I am interested to earn income online but am aware it is illegal. However, if the paypal account is registered under a member of my family then he/she can accept payments on my behalf right? and thereby pay tax in the country in which payments are received?

Hi I am interested to earn income online, but am on F1 status in US. I was wondering if I create a paypal account under a another person’s name (eg, friend, family) to accept payments on my behalf, would that be fine? As any payments received would be taxed in the country they have been sent to.
