F1, OPT and H1B Visa Tax Information
F1 Visa
F-1 visa holders are exempt from paying FICA Taxes, Social Security and Medicare, for a limited time. However, they are subjected to federal taxes, and state/local taxes, if applicable, students on F-1 filing their (federal) income taxes who have been in the USA for 5 years or less need to use the correct tax forms, such as 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ. Can H1B and F1 Visa holders earn money online?
H1B people, its little harsh but you got to understand this point that you are Resident Alien (Immigrant) at this point and can only work for your employer and if there is any other source of Income(online earnings) its considered as Illegal earnings. So basically, if you are on a H1-B visa, you are authorized to work for only one those employers that sponsor your visa. You cannot be self-employed and earn additional income and doing so will render you out-of-status. (more…)

Q) I have got my F1 visa in January 2009; I also got my H1b approved in April 2009. I have to join fall 2009 Sep 09 at my University in USA. I am currently in Pakistan. I want to complete at least 2 semesters and then change my status to h1b. My employer is planning to call me by the mid of next year. Kindly guide me and is that possible I may enter USA and start my education on F1, complete my 2 semesters, and then use my H1b approved this year to change my status. I need urgent help. In spite of the requirement that H-1B workers be paid the prevailing wage, H-1B workers earn significantly less than their American counterparts. On average, applications for H-1B workers in computer occupations were for wages $13,000 less than Americans in the same occupation and state. (more…)
